The Funabashi Nanbu Incineration Plant incinerates 339 tons of garbage per day. The annual amount of incineration is 85,965 tons. The total floor area is about 13,000 m2 and is a six-story building made of reinforced concrete. It is equipped with three stoker-type incinerators that slowly move garbage on the grate and burn it.
Here, there is a steam turbine generator 8400kW facility that utilizes the heat of waste incineration. This produces 53 million kWh annually. This electricity supplies the electricity required for the facility, and the surplus of 31,764,000 kWh is sold to the electric power company, and the annual income is expected to be about 540 million yen.
According to the “General Waste Discharge and Treatment Status (FY2021)” posted on the Ministry of the Environment’s website, the total amount of waste generated nationwide in FY2021 was 40.95 million tons.If the same waste incineration plant were built to process and generate electricity for all 40.95 million tons of garbage across the nation, it is expected that the amount of electricity generated would be approximately 25.2 billion kWh.
This waste incineration generates 29.9 million tons of carbon dioxide, which is lower than the amount absorbed by Japan's forests, which is 47.6 million tons.
