Proportion of greenhouse gases in Japan

Japan's greenhouse gas emissions are 1,170 million tons in total, as shown in the table below, on the Ministry of the Environment's website, "Greenhouse gas emissions and absorption amounts for fiscal year 2021 (Reiwa 3) (final values1)."

FY2021 Emissions

Greenhouse gas Million tons ratio
carbon dioxide 1,064.0 90.9%
methane 27.4 2.3%
Nitrous oxide 19.5 1.7%
Freon 59.1 5.1%
Total 1,170.0 100.0%

As shown in this table, carbon dioxide accounts for the overwhelming majority of greenhouse gases, at 90.9%, while methane, nitrous oxide, and fluorocarbons only account for a small proportion of 9.1% when converted to CO2.

We can see that reducing carbon dioxide is essential to preventing global warming.

This carbon dioxide emissions are as shown in the table below by sector, as described in the "Emissions status of each greenhouse gas" section of the same document.

FY2021 Departmental Emissions Status

place of occurrence Million tons ratio (Electricity-derived) (share)
Factories, etc. 373.0 35.1% (104) (9.8%)
Car, etc. 185.0 17.4% ( 7) ( 0.6%)
Offices, etc. 190.0 17.9% (130.1) (12.2%)
General household 156.0 14.7% (104.4) (9.8%)
Refineries, power plants, etc. 83.7 7.9%
Industrial process and product use 43.0 4.0%
Incineration of waste 29.9 2.8%
Other 3.4 0.2%
total 1,064.0 100.0% (345.5) (32.4%)

Electricity-derived.The amount of carbon dioxide emitted by thermal power plants was converted from the amount of electricity used by each department.

The industrial sector emits more carbon dioxide due to the use of heat from burning fossil fuels in factories and other places than from electricity.

The transportation sector emits carbon dioxide through aircraft, ships, trains and cars that use fossil fuels.

The commercial and other sectors and the residential sector use electricity more, and carbon dioxide emissions are due to the combustion of gas stoves and city gas used for hot water and space heating.
